As the article notes, estimates suggest that the overall incidence of POCD in older patients can be as high as 50-80% at discharge, 20-50% at six weeks and 10-30% at six months post-surgery. New therapies are key, as well as ways of pinpointing patients most at-risk of developing POCD so that they can be specifically targeted for treatment.
“In the future, we want to be able to measure people’s cognitive function before they go in for surgery, to get a measure of how vulnerable or resilient their brain is, and if they’re vulnerable, have a way to treat that,” comments Jenny.
